On Tuesday, Motorola revealed the latest addition to its budget-friendly Moto G series, the Moto G Play (2024). This year, the device boasts several improvements and upgrades. Maintaining its 6.5-inch 90Hz display with a substantial bezel, the device features a matte finish in a sapphire blue color on the back and a water-repellent screen.

Moto G Play Camera
In contrast to its predecessor’s three cameras, the Moto G Play is equipped with a single 50MP sensor (f/1.8, 0.64μm), a notable enhancement from the previous year’s 16MP rear camera. The use of pixel binning is expected to yield better images at a lower resolution output, complemented by the addition of HDR and Phase Detection Autofocus for balanced, well-lit images. The main rear camera offers various shooting modes with 8x digital zoom, including night vision, Portrait, Live Filters, Panorama, Pro Mode (w/ Long Exposure), Dual Capture Photo, Burst Shot, and more.
The front camera sees an upgrade to 8MP, incorporating Google Lens integration and AI-powered Active Photos that can detect smiles. For audio, the Moto G Play 2024 is equipped with Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, promising a high-quality audio experience.
Moto G Play Software
Running on Android 13, this year’s edition features a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip instead of the lower-end MediaTek chip from the previous model, potentially providing improved performance. The phone offers up to 4GB RAM, expandable with an additional 2GB of virtual RAM, making it competitive among other Android phones under $200. The storage capacity is increased to 64GB from last year’s 32GB.
Moto G Play Battery
With a 5,000mAh battery, the Moto G Play 2024 is claimed to last 46 hours on a single charge, a slight reduction from its predecessor’s 72 hours. Despite the downgrade, the two-day estimate is still impressive. The phone supports 15W wired charging, an improvement from the previous 10W, although it comes with a 10W charger in the box.
Notably, 5G connectivity is not yet introduced to this device, which may be seen as a significant drawback. Despite criticisms of the Moto G Play (2023) for its sluggish MediaTek chip, the 2024 version appears to be a moderate yet welcome upgrade, as stated by Android Central’s managing editor, Derrek Lee.
Moto G Play Price
The Moto G Play (2024) will be available in the U.S. from February 8 at a price of $149.99, offered unlocked at Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Motorola.com. In Canada, it will be available from January 26 through select carriers and national retailers.
