Since 2019, Google Pixel smartphones have featured Car Crash Detection, though it was initially limited to specific regions. The tech giant is now extending this safety feature to additional countries, including India. Google has expanded the list of supported regions for the Car Crash Detection feature on Pixel phones, which initially debuted in the US in 2019, two years before Apple introduced a similar feature on its devices.
As initially reported by Android Central, Google’s support page for Pixel phones now includes five new countries where Car Crash Detection is supported: India, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, and Switzerland. Notably, the feature is not yet available in Indian languages. It’s important to understand that Car Crash Detection is only compatible with Pixel 4a and newer devices, and a SIM card is required for the feature to function.

As the name suggests, Car Crash Detection is designed to identify severe car accidents involving Pixel users. When such an event occurs, the feature automatically notifies emergency services and shares the user’s location. Google’s Pixel 4a and newer phones leverage information from the phone’s location, motion sensors, and nearby sounds to detect a car crash.
In the event of an accident, the Pixel phone will vibrate, sound an alarm at maximum volume, and inquire if the user requires assistance.
Upon confirmation or in the absence of a response, the phone will attempt to contact the pan-India emergency services number, 112, providing them with the user’s location and crash data.
It’s important to note that Pixel phones may not detect all types of car accidents, and certain high-impact activities, such as a roller coaster ride, could trigger the crash detection feature. Additionally, for successful communication with emergency services, Pixel phones must be connected to a stable mobile network.
