Adventure to Mt. Kilimanjaro

There are many versions of Africa. Some good, some bad and some unknown!

But, what I do know is that Africa; the eastern part of it to be precise, is home to one of the most serene wilderness, wherein, one can find wildlife at its prime. Yes, I am talking about Kilimanjaro National Park and yes I am talking about the green Gods heaven itself aka Tanzania!

However, if you ask me, the most exciting part of this eastern African country has to be the trek to Kilimanjaro. For people who love trekking mountains, they would know exactly what I am talking about, as this giant, is a challenge you would not want to say no to.

And for those who are a bit light on geography and history, here is a piece of information, which would give you an idea, why I am going gaga about this place.

At 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro happens to be the highest mountain in Africa, which is actually an enormous stratovolcano. Its formation began about a million years ago, and what stands there today, is a giant mountain covered with layers of hardened volcanic ash, lava, pumice, and tephra — thanks to the fallout of volcanic eruption.

But before you get all worried, let me also tell you that the last eruption at Mount Kilimanjaro happened about 360,000 years ago- so no sweat!

Sounds good? It has to.

Now before you even think of taking on this challenge, here is all that I think you should know about Kilimanjaro.

How long does it take to walk up Kilimanjaro

The route, the variations are tricky and although people have often referred to this mountain as a ‘walk-up’ the duration can be anywhere from five to nine days, depending upon your physical condition of course, but also your will power.

If statistics are to be believed, almost half of the climbers quit mid-way and only the other half reaches to the top.

Which bracket do you think you fall into?

How high is it compared to Mount Everest

The highest peak on Mt. Kilimanjaro is Uhuru Peak, which stands tall at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). On the other hand, Mount Everest is a giant that stands tall at 8,848 meters (29,029 feet).

So, practically, if you happen to reach the highest peak of Mount Kilimajaro, you would have covered almost two-third of Mount Everest.

You can pat yourself on the back for that – if you manage to achieve the feat that is!

The Temperature At The Peak

Expect the temperature to be anywhere between -7 to -29 degree Celsius at the peak of Uhuru. Make sure you have packed well and stocked your backpack with warm jackets.

Because of the great height, the mountain creates its own weather and is nearly impossible to predict. But, that is what makes it all the more worth the adventure, isn’t it?

Best Time To Trek

January-March is generally colder than June-October and there is a higher probability of encountering snow on the summit. I would recommend you to take the opinion of an adventure planner like Mojhi, to make things easy for yourself.

How To Reach There

The climb starts from Moshi or Arusha town, which is located approximately at a distance of 45 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. So that is where you got to drop at.
