Tesla (TSLA) has officially reached a major milestone—its dedicated high-volume production line at its Sparks, Nevada facility has successfully produced its first Tesla Semi trucks. The announcement came via a post on X on Wednesday, marking the end of a nearly decade-long wait for mass production of Tesla’s commercial trucking solution, which was first unveiled to the public back in 2017.

Following the announcement, Tesla’s stock saw a positive movement. On Thursday afternoon, shares rose by approximately 1.5%, recovering from a slight dip of 0.9% the previous day.

The Tesla Semi is available in two versions, catering to different range needs. The Standard Range model offers a range of 325 miles, while the Long Range version can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge. These estimates are based on a fully loaded truck weighing 82,000 pounds.

In terms of pricing, the Standard Range variant is expected to cost around $260,000, whereas the Long Range version is priced closer to $290,000.

Both variants are equipped with more than 1,000 horsepower, delivering powerful performance for heavy-duty transport. Tesla has also developed dedicated charging infrastructure for these trucks, known as Megachargers, which can recharge up to 60% of the truck’s battery in approximately 30 minutes—making them practical for long-haul operations.

From Concept to Production: A Long Journey

The journey from unveiling the Tesla Semi to mass production has been far from straightforward. After its initial reveal in 2017, it took several years before the first pilot units were introduced in 2022. These early units were delivered to PepsiCo (PEP) and were largely assembled by hand rather than produced through a fully automated manufacturing process.

This slow and complex rollout highlights the challenges Tesla faced in scaling production for a completely new category of vehicle.

Tesla’s Broader Strategy and New Vehicle Focus

As with many of Tesla’s projects, the production of the Semi trucks is highly vertically integrated. The same Nevada factory responsible for building the trucks also manufactures the battery cells that power them, allowing Tesla to maintain tighter control over production efficiency and costs.

The Tesla Semi represents one of the company’s latest product launches, following its growing focus on scaling robotaxi production. Tesla is gradually shifting away from traditional retail passenger vehicles and instead concentrating on future-forward technologies such as its Cybercab robotaxi and, eventually, advanced humanoid robots.

During a recent investor call, CEO Elon Musk emphasized that scaling production for new products like the Semi and Cybercab will take time. He explained that introducing a product with an entirely new supply chain typically follows a slow initial phase before accelerating rapidly.

According to Musk, early production of both the Tesla Semi and Cybercab is expected to be limited. However, production is anticipated to ramp up significantly toward the end of the year and continue expanding into the next year. Tesla also plans to increase output across all its factories and vehicle lines as much as possible during this period.

Tesla Stock Performance

The recent uptick in Tesla’s stock helped offset earlier losses in the week. Overall, shares have gained about 0.6% this week. However, the stock has faced challenges throughout the year, declining approximately 16% so far.

In the week of April 17, Tesla broke an eight-week losing streak with a sharp rise of nearly 15%. This surge was driven by positive investor sentiment following updates on Tesla’s in-house chip development, an upgrade from UBS analysts, and a broader market rally that boosted major tech stocks.

Despite recent volatility, Tesla’s stock has performed well over a longer timeframe, gaining around 30% over the past 12 months.
