Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, is not a city that comes easily to mind as a destination for a romantic getaway. It is better known for backpacking and business trips, but in reality, the city is so vast and diverse that there are plenty of things for all sorts of visitors to do, including couples.
Whether you and your other half are foodies, thrill-seekers, sports fans, animal lovers, or anything else, there are lots of exciting adventures for you to enjoy in Southeast Asia’s most visited city.
Here are some of the unique and popular things to do that the city’s visitors love.
- Stay in luxury: A stay at a 5 or 4 star hotel in Bangkok can be had for cheaper than in many countries. What better way is there to kick off a romantic break than a mini bar, room service, and waking up wrapped in wonderfully soft linens?
Many of Bangkok’s best hotels are located near the city’s top attractions, and several offer charming riverside views.
- Enjoy the food: Thai food is an enormous source of pride among the locals. However, many of the best places to sample local delicacies are at markets or street food stalls where you’ll likely be sat outside on plastic tables and chairs. While a definite must-do, it’s hardly romantic.
For a more intimate and elegant setting, you could head to one of the city’s many world-renowned restaurants, or a tea room at one of the luxury hotels.
- Take a beach break: This is cheating a little because it means going out of Bangkok, but the city’s airports mean you are less than 90 minutes from some of the best beaches not only in Thailand but in the world.
The picture-perfect beaches in Phuket make it a popular vacation spot, and planes make the short hop there and back from Bangkok daily.
- See a Muay Thai match: Any couples who are into sports or who are looking for an exciting way to absorb some Thai culture will love seeing the national sport in action at one of the city’s stadiums.
Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is a thrilling combat sport in which almost anything goes: fists, feet, knees, and elbows. It’s not for the squeamish, but it can make a great night out. Attendees can expect to see multiple fights in a single night.
- Take a romantic ride around the Ancient City: This popular attraction features to-scale replicas of some of the country’s most famous buildings, and it is a great place to learn about Thai history and architecture, as well as take photos.
However, it is too big to walk around. Hiring a bike or a buggy is the best way to enjoy it.
- Enjoy the view: Bangkok is full of rooftop bars where couples can enjoy cocktails under the stars and gaze out over the millions of lights in the city’s incredible skyline.
Alternatively, you can test your nerves at the Mahanakhon Skywalk, which has a glass floor 78 stories above street level.
There is plenty more for couples to discover in Bangkok to fill up their time besides these. Remember to bear in mind that some attractions may require the purchase of tickets or advance bookings.
