Yamaha has finally launched the much-awaited YZF-R2 in India, giving buyers a new option in the entry-level performance motorcycle segment. The R2 arrives as a follow-up to the popular YZF-R15, but it is not simply a bigger-capacity version of the existing bike. Yamaha has developed the R2 around a completely new platform and has equipped it with a larger engine, a different frame and several new features.
Pre-bookings for the Yamaha YZF-R2 had opened on August 12 with a booking amount of Rs 10,000. Interestingly, Yamaha will continue selling the R15 alongside the new R2, which means customers will have the option of choosing between the R15, R2, MT-15 and XSR 155 within Yamaha’s current lineup.
The R2 is built around an all-new steel frame that weighs just 14kg and gets a 204cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. With 26.5hp on tap, the motorcycle also has a slight power advantage over some of its closest rivals.
Yamaha YZF-R2: What is new compared with the R15?
Brand-new platform, engine and several new features
One of the biggest changes with the Yamaha R2 is the platform itself. Unlike the R15, the new motorcycle is based on an entirely new platform and gets a 204cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The motor produces 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm of peak torque at 8,000rpm.
At first glance, the engine configuration may sound familiar because, like the R15, the R2 also uses a single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. However, Yamaha has made some important changes to the motor. The R2 uses a DOHC, or double overhead camshaft, setup, while the R15 uses a SOHC, or single overhead camshaft, arrangement.
The new engine also does not feature Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system, which is found on the R15. Instead, Yamaha has focused on other engineering changes to extract performance from the larger engine.
Another interesting detail is the use of DLC, or diamond-like carbon, coating on the valves. This technology has also been seen on Yamaha’s erstwhile flagship YZF-R1, and its presence on the R2 highlights the company’s focus on reducing friction and improving durability in the engine.
The frame is another major departure from the R15. While the R15 uses Yamaha’s well-known Deltabox frame, the R2 gets an all-new diamond-type steel frame. Yamaha says the frame weighs only 14kg, helping the motorcycle maintain a relatively low overall kerb weight despite its larger engine and additional equipment.
The base version of the Yamaha R2 weighs 149kg, according to the company, making it the lightest motorcycle in its segment. The middle and top variants are slightly heavier at 150kg.
The R2 also gets a seat height of 810mm. That makes the seat 5mm lower than the R15’s, which could make the new motorcycle a little more accessible to a wider range of riders.
Performance is another area where the R2 has an advantage. With 26.5hp, it offers slightly more power than its key rivals, while its 19.1Nm torque output is broadly comparable with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.
So, while the R2 shares the same basic single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine layout as the R15, Yamaha has made enough changes to the engine, chassis and overall platform to make the new motorcycle a distinct product rather than simply an enlarged R15.
Yamaha YZF-R2: Features and variants
Three variants available with a price gap of Rs 23,000
Yamaha is also trying to make the R2 more attractive with a fairly long list of features. The motorcycle comes with a ride-by-wire throttle, which allows Yamaha to offer three different riding modes. It also gets an assist and slipper clutch, 37mm USD front forks and dual-channel ABS as standard across the range.
The R2 also carries over several technology-focused features that have already been seen on the higher-spec R15 M. These include a 5-inch TFT instrument cluster and traction control.
The middle variant gets additional equipment over the base version. Most notably, it becomes the first motorcycle in its segment to feature a bi-directional quickshifter. This allows the rider to make both upshifts and downshifts without using the clutch, making gear changes quicker and potentially more convenient during spirited riding.
The middle variant also gets body-coloured alloy wheels, giving it a more premium appearance compared with the base version.
At the top of the range sits the Yamaha YZF-R2 M. This version adds several extra features aimed at riders looking for a more premium package. The R2 M gets preload-adjustable suspension at both the front and rear, along with adjustable brake and clutch levers.
It also gets a faux-suede seat and a keyless system, adding to the motorcycle’s premium feel. Yamaha has also given each of the three variants its own distinct colour options, allowing buyers to differentiate between the different versions.
Yamaha YZF-R2: Price in India
Yamaha has positioned the R2 above the R15 in its motorcycle lineup, with three variants available to buyers.
The Yamaha YZF-R2 base variant is priced at Rs 2.30 lakh, while the middle variant costs Rs 2.39 lakh. The range-topping R2 M is priced at Rs 2.53 lakh. All three prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
This means there is a Rs 23,000 difference between the most affordable R2 and the top-spec R2 M.
Yamaha has also confirmed that the YZF-R2 will be sold exclusively through its Blue Square dealership network. This makes the motorcycle part of Yamaha’s more premium retail strategy, rather than being available through every Yamaha outlet.
Bookings for the Yamaha YZF-R2 are now open, with the booking amount set at Rs 10,000. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from mid-September.
With its larger 204cc engine, 26.5hp output, lightweight frame, three riding modes, traction control, TFT display and segment-first bi-directional quickshifter, the Yamaha YZF-R2 brings a significantly different proposition to the segment. At the same time, Yamaha will continue selling the R15, giving buyers the choice between the established R15 and the newer, more powerful R2.
