Thirteen years after the mysterious disappearance of his wife in the quiet town of Bright Falls, the renowned author Alan Wake finds himself ensnared within a Dark Place, a realm from which he struggles to extract himself. As I sit down to compose this review of Alan Wake II, I can’t help but relate to his predicament. This game is so extraordinary and unique in its experience that it’s challenging to pinpoint where to begin.

Alan Wake 2 is a solitary adventure that effortlessly transitions from a slow-burning psychological thriller to intense survival horror action. It moves between exquisitely crafted game worlds and captivating full-motion video sequences. It alternates between grim investigations and astonishing musical interludes.

It’s intense, unconventional, and for the most part, absolutely brilliant. Despite arriving in a year brimming with outstanding games, Alan Wake 2 still shines as brightly as a freshly ignited signal flare.

Spanning two wildly distinct realities, the approximately 17-hour story of Alan Wake 2 is notably more coherent than that of the original, despite its increased complexity. We rejoin the tale in present-day Bright Falls, now in control of FBI Agent Saga Anderson, dispatched to investigate a series of ritualistic murders, with the latest victim discovered beside Cauldron Lake, his heart inexplicably missing. Saga is a likable addition to the peculiar world shared with Remedy Entertainment’s other supernatural game, Control.

She is dedicated to her work but not immune to playful banter with her partner, Special Agent Alex Casey. The initial hours are largely devoid of combat, focusing on procedural investigation, grounding the story in realism before the encroaching darkness transforms the serene landscape into a harrowing nightmare.

One reason the main mystery and various subplots are easy to follow is the “caseboard” in Saga’s metaphysical realm, allowing you to organize evidence, character profiles, and foreshadowing manuscript pages. This feature helps keep track of details, which is particularly useful if you’re accustomed to watching complex crime dramas while simultaneously following Reddit threads on your phone.

As Saga’s investigation unfolds in the early stages of Alan Wake 2, each discovery raises more questions than it answers. Why do the locals act as if they’ve known Saga for years? Why is the janitor character from Control performing karaoke in a local town hall? Why did a corpse suddenly emerge from the morgue and venture into the woods? Alan Wake 2 maintains an unsettling atmosphere regardless of its adjustable difficulty settings.

The intrigue deepens when Alan Wake resurfaces near Cauldron Lake, seemingly unaware of his 13-year absence. This is where Alan Wake 2 takes a truly bizarre turn. The perspective oscillates between Saga’s quest for the truth in Bright Falls and Alan’s desperate attempts to escape his sinister Dark Place dimension. The two narratives gradually intertwine in increasingly unpredictable and bewildering ways, making it challenging to distinguish fact from fiction within the fiction. The story ultimately culminates in a well-executed, emotionally impactful ending, although a few loose ends are intentionally left dangling.

Alan Wake 2’s contrasting settings add to its allure. While the lakeside vistas of Bright Falls offer stunning sunset scenes and richly detailed forests, it’s Alan’s stages, set in a grimy, neon-soaked New York plaza, that truly showcase Remedy’s artistic prowess. This nightmarish version of the Big Apple is a haunting otherworld, captivating to explore, from graffiti-covered construction sites to menacing subway tunnels below.

Alan’s stages also introduce engaging environmental puzzles. Using a paranormal table lamp, Alan can manipulate light sources, creating safe zones while altering the environment to open up new paths. This mechanic grows in complexity, requiring thoughtful manipulation of multiple light sources to progress.

In contrast, Alan’s reality involves seeking out plot elements in the form of floating orbs, creating eclipse-triggered ghostly scenes from his own crime novel series. These scenes can be rewritten to alter his reality and reveal unsettling parallels to the Bright Falls slayings. This narrative device adds an intriguing layer to the game.

Sam Lake, Alan Wake 2’s Creative Director, plays dual roles as Alex Casey in Alan’s world and FBI Special Agent Alex Casey in Saga’s story. This meta-mystery, entwined with a late-night talk show featuring Sam Lake as himself, adds a layer of complexity and intrigue. The game’s unpredictability and recursive loops contribute to its unique and captivating narrative.

While the core combat mechanics of Alan Wake 2 resemble those of the original, the execution has been significantly improved. Enemies, shadowy figures, are vanquished by using your flashlight to burn away their dark shields and targeting glowing weak points when exposed. This adds depth to combat, rewarding precise shooting.

An exciting addition is the unlimited sprint ability for both Saga and Alan, enhancing their agility. The dodge mechanic feels more responsive, enabling better maneuverability. Despite these improvements, ammunition and batteries remain scarce, ensuring a challenging experience. The diverse array of enemies, from hulking brutes to darting wolves and eerie mirror monsters, keeps players on their toes.

Boss fights in Alan Wake 2 are exhilarating, providing memorable encounters. For instance, a close-quarters battle with a reanimated corpse is intense, as is a later fight involving darkness blobs. One unique threat is the whispering apparitions in Alan’s reality. Most of the time, they dissipate when illuminated but occasionally reveal actual physical threats, creating a sense of unease.

Each character has a distinct skill tree, with Alan’s offering more depth with multiple upgrades. In contrast, Saga’s upgrades are limited and resource-intensive. While Saga’s upgrades seem less essential on normal difficulty, they may prove more valuable on the planned Nightmare difficulty.

Saga’s segments occasionally feature survival-horror tropes, such as fuse boxes and combination locks. However, these elements add to the gameplay’s complexity.

Despite some minor issues, Alan Wake II’s strengths overshadow its flaws. The game draws inspiration from film, television, and modern gaming classics, incorporating fourth-wall trickery and full-motion video moments that surprise and engage players. It even features a mesmerizing interactive musical sequence, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

In conclusion, Alan Wake II delivers a bold and mind-bending survival-horror storyline, exceptional art direction, and impeccable audio design. It revitalizes the series’ light-based combat with precision. While character-specific skill trees could be better balanced, both sides of the story are fascinating, fear-inducing, and consistently surprising. Alan Wake II is an outstanding sequel that outshines its cult-classic predecessor, offering a refined and immersive experience.
